Little is known about the ancestry of the notorious pirate families of Melaka, on the Malaysian coast, but the stories say they are a mixture of renegade Chinese mercenaries, Indonesian monks gone bad and runaways from the Dutch, Portuguese and Arab merchant ships. Babybel was born into this melting pot and proved too much for even her battle-hardened family to handle.

She was sent to a Catholic convent for the protection of those around her, but escaped in a way too complicated to explain, with the help of a large piece of Dutch cheese, an empty trombone case and her ability to bend her fingers backwards to a seventy-degree angle.

Her search to find a trombone for the empty case led her to Bristol where she is now the formidable Fromage en Feu brass section, instantly recognisable by the way she handles her ‘bone.
